This page contains information about Chris X Edwards, a "Research Associate" in the Abagyan Lab. I am technically a part of the School of Pharmacy at UCSD but I actually work primarily at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. I am working with researchers who specialize in applying computational chemistry to rational drug design and drug lead discovery. Computational chemistry benefits from substantial computing power which explains my predominant role.

whoami

In November 2009 I started working for the Abagyan Lab at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UCSD. Previously I worked for the Computer Science Department at UCSD as the system administrator for the Systems and Networking Research Group. I also worked at the Burnham Institute as Scientific Computing Manager for a while, but it was a silly place.

My interests include Linux, virtual machine management, system administration, computer security, software engineering, programming language design, computational geometry, spatial databases, statistical simulation, machine learning, and philosophical topics germane to computer science.

PGP/GPG

If I actually did write an official announcement that seems suspicious in some way, then there is a good chance that I cryptographically signed it. (I'll generate a new key for UCSD soon and post it here.)

My personal PGP/GPG public key is available and you are welcome to visit or phone me for a personal confirmation of my PGP fingerprint.

Technical Stuff Biotech People Might Find Interesting

Xeduler Infamy

Do you use OpenPBS/Torque? If so, I'd love to hear why. I really don't understand what this clumsy system has to offer. I have written a shockingly simple, yet effective batch job dispatching system called Xeduler.

pdbCharmer Infamy

Interested in parsing PDB (i.e. Protein Data Bank) files with Python? So am I. Here are some notes about my pdbCharmer parsing system.

Perl Infamy

Running an interactive web service? Interested in Perl CGI security? I wrote a small report to get you started.

TOPSAN - The Open Protein Structure Annotation Network

I am one of the founding members of TOPSAN which is an innovative way for scientists to communicate. Although it is specifically designed to accommodate the needs of protein researchers, the general concepts developed for TOPSAN apply to all scientific discourse. I am interested in the evolution of science and feel that TOPSAN is a good model for where science is headed.
